Doña Chonita, one of the newer colonia works, is located on the Eastern edge of Mazatlan. Mazatlan is a growing city, with much of the tourism growth focused on the Northern end, while the national growth extends to the East, with Doña Chonita at the center. Dozens of new subdivisions and communities are being built within walking distance of the church property. Many of the new subdivisions are lovely concrete homes built for working class residents. There are also two large impoverished tar-paper shacks communities within walking distance, where La Viña has developed a presence through outreach events including: large group feedings, medical support, and even some more specific aid to truly needy families. A team from Champaign, Illinois, built a roof for a single working mom who had her children sleeping under garbage bags. Another single mom received a mattress so her children wouldn’t have to sleep on the dirt floor.
Missionaries Kyle & Ellen Benefield, and their children, live three blocks from the yet unfinished church among the people they serve. The Benefields see Doña Chonita as a place with great potential in an ideal location. For more information see their website: http://www.mexicomercy.org/
